53 Words

3rd January 2018

This week I started to read the whole Bible again. My New Testament readings began with Matthew. His ‘gospel’ contains Jesus’ great preach known as ‘the sermon on the mount’. In chapter six Jesus disciples asked him how should they pray? This is his answer...

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
Matthew 6:9-13 The NIV Bible

This is known as ‘The Lord’s Prayer’. Here in the book of Matthew it is just 53 words, and what power-packed words they are! I am not a great prayer, but I have repeatedly come back to these 53 words throughout my Christian walk to help me to pray. So right at the beginning of 2018 let me encourage you to come back to ‘The Lord’s Prayer’. Read it, study it, think about it and most importantly pray it!
