A Different Spirit
15th March 2017
This week I have been reading Numbers. This is the fourth book in the Bible and is the account of the Israelites wandering in the ‘wilderness’. It also includes two census’ where the people were counted - hence the book’s name! In chapter 13 the Jews sent 12 spies into Canaan, the land that God had promised to give them. The spies spent 40 days looking around. When they came back and reported what they saw only Joshua (Moses’ assistant) and Caleb said that they could and should take the land. The other 10 said that it would be too dangerous and difficult. This negativity made the rest of the people complain, saying that they wished they had stayed in Egypt! Moses was not pleased with them, neither was God and so He said that none of them would move into Canaan! However…
But my servant Caleb has a different spirit. He follows me with his whole heart. So I will bring him into the land he went to. And his children after him will receive land there. Numbers 14:24 The NIV Bible
God smiled at Caleb (along with Joshua) as he trusted Him and saw Canaan with eyes of ‘faith’. That was the ‘different spirit’ that he had. Caleb also trusted God, and was willing to follow Him wholeheartedly. God loved this faith and trust and rewarded it by allowing him to get to Canaan! There is something in this for us: God smiles on us when we live in that same ‘different spirit’…that is following God whole heartedly, trusting Him and looking at opportunities with eyes of faith!
