Be Still!

11th April 2018

This week I have been reading Psalm 46. It is a celebration of God’s sanctuary (Jerusalem) and an encouragement to hope and trust in God when facing life’s challenges! A major theme is of God being a place of refuge or a safe place for people amidst troubles. Near the end of the psalm, there is this bold (and famous) proclamation...

God says, “Be still and know that I am God. I will be praised in all the nations; I will be praised throughout the earth.”
Psalm 46:10 The NCV Bible

The Hebrew word for ‘Be Still’ is ‘Enough’ or ‘Stop’. It’s a climactic moment! The Psalm has spoken of God as a safe place in the face of ‘earthquakes’, ‘uproar’, ‘wars’ and ‘desolation’. Then in verse 10 God spoke and said ‘Enough’! God himself will intervene and change things, and the effects of that will be universal and for His glory and praise. This prophetic moment is key theme of the Old Testament, which was fulfilled in Jesus. Ultimately, Jesus is the global ‘safe place’ for everyone. Jesus is with us and Jesus is the one in whom we hope and trust. Whatever you are facing today Psalm 46 declares, “Be still and know that I am God”!
