Get out of your boat

17th January 2018

This week I have been reading Matthew’s gospel (the first book in the New Testament). It’s a collection of eye-witness stories of the life of Jesus. In chapter 14 Jesus’s followers had left him on the shore whilst they had set of across a large lake in a boat...

Between three and six o’clock in the morning, Jesus came to them, walking on the water. When his followers saw him walking on the water, they were afraid. They said, “It’s a ghost!” and cried out in fear. But Jesus quickly spoke to them, “Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.” Peter said, “Lord, if it is really you, then command me to come to you on the water.” Jesus said, “Come.” And Peter left the boat and walked on the water to Jesus. But when Peter saw the wind and the waves, he became afraid and began to sink. He shouted, “Lord, save me!”
Matthew 14:25-30 The NCV Bible’s a water-walking ghost!! Actually, no, it was Jesus, the Lord of creation, who was performing yet another amazing miracle before his followers (the Disciples). Once they had gotten over the shock, Peter boldly wanted to do what Jesus was doing. And so, with Jesus’ blessing, Peter climbed out and ‘water walked’. However once he saw all around him he panicked, bur Jesus was there to save the day! As Christians, there are times when we need to get out of our boat to follow Jesus. The circumstances may be against us, but with bold trust, we too can ‘water walk’. Better still, if things don’t go to plan Jesus is right there to save the day!

God bless
