The Gift of Wisdom

23rd August 2017

This week I have been reading 1 Corinthians. It is the first of a couple of letters from the Apostle Paul to the new church in the Corinth (Greece). He wrote to address some issues that were arising in the church around how these new Christians should behave. In chapter 12 he turns his attention towards ‘spiritual gifts’ from God...

The Spirit gives one person the ability to speak with wisdom, and the same Spirit gives another the ability to speak with knowledge. The same Spirit gives faith to one person. And, to another, that one Spirit gives gifts of healing. The Spirit gives to another person the power to do miracles, to another the ability to prophesy. And he gives to another the ability to know the difference between good and evil spirits. The Spirit gives one person the ability to speak in different kinds of languages and to another the ability to interpret those languages.
1 Corinthians 12:8-10 The NCV Bible

I have read this list many times over the years, been taught them, counted up how many I have as well as trying to put them into practice! However, what struck me reading g this section again was the first gift on the list...wisdom! I have overlooked this gift and focused more on the ‘dramatic’ ones (miracles, healing, prophesy etc). Wisdom is a gift and comes from God. It may not be as visible or prominent in the Christian ‘world’ but it is first on the gift list! Wisdom is used in ALL aspects of life, and Godly wisdom will bring order, peace, justice, security and blessing (just take a look and King Solomon). What a gift! Whatever you are doing today ask for this wonderful spiritual gift from God...
