Go Joe!

6th December 2017

This week I have been reading more of the Christmas Story! Mary was ‘pledged’ to be married to local carpenter called Joseph. In their context that meant they were already a couple! When Joseph discovered that Mary was pregnant, he thought it best to secretly ‘divorce’ her; however, God had other ideas...

An angel of the Lord came to him in a dream. The angel said, “Joseph, descendant of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the baby in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this happened to bring about what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will be pregnant. She will have a son, and they will name him Immanuel,” which means “God is with us.” When Joseph woke up, he did what the Lord’s angel had told him to do. Joseph took Mary as his wife, but he did not have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to the son. And Joseph named him Jesus.
Matthew 1:20-24 The NCV Bible

Joseph may seem like a minor character in the Nativity story, but he plays a very important role as Jesus’ earthly father. By sticking with Mary he was being obedient to what the angel sent by God asked of him. It was not enough for God just to send and angel to Mary. God had to contact Joseph directly as well. This shows the importance of what God was up to by sending Jesus! Like Mary, Joseph also chose to say ‘yes’ to God, probably unaware of all that was to follow! When we say ‘yes’ to God we may not know what lies ahead, but we can be certain that whatever we face, ‘Immanuel’ is with us.
