Obedience

17th May 2017

This week I have been reading the 1 Samuel. This Old Testament book is the account of the establishment of a king for Israel. It begins by identifying God’s prophet, Samuel, who God used to select the first king, Saul. Unfortunately, Saul was unable to keep the commands of God and was more worried about his own reputation and pleasing the people! In Chapter 13 Saul disobeyed God’s instructions that Samuel told him. When Samuel met up with him, he said...

“You acted foolishly! You haven’t obeyed the command of the Lord your God. If you had obeyed him, the Lord would have made your kingdom continue in Israel always, but now your kingdom will not continue. The Lord has looked for the kind of man he wants. He has appointed him to rule his people, because you haven’t obeyed his command.”
1 Samuel 13:13-14 The NCV Bible

Saul did not obey what God said. He was instructed to wait for Samuel to offer a sacrifice to God. But Samuel was late, and Saul’s army started to dessert him, so Saul took matters into his own hands and went ahead without Samuel! This displeased God (and Samuel!). These actions resulted in Saul being rejected by God as the king of Israel! Christians are called to follow Jesus. That means listening to Him and being obedient to what He says. Have you ever been impatient with God and taken matters into your own hands? That’s what Saul did and the consequences were devastating. So be wise and obedient to all that Jesus says to you!
