Obedient, Anointed & Affirmed

21st March 2018

This week I have been reading Luke’s gospel. This is the third book in the New Testament and the third account of Jesus’ life. The author, Dr Luke, wrote a well-ordered detailed account of what Jesus did, highlighting how much Jesus loved people and how He brought hope, joy and salvation! In chapter three there was a very special event...

When all the people were being baptized by John, Jesus also was baptized. While Jesus was praying, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit came down on him in the form of a dove. Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “You are my Son, whom I love, and I am very pleased with you.”
Luke 3:21-22 The NCV Bible

The baptism of Jesus was a very significant time. In this brief moment, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit were all present. Firstly, Jesus (God the Son) was obedient to what many Jews were doing and was baptised, by his cousin John. Secondly, the Holy Spirit came on Jesus (anointed him), and was visible in the form of a dove. Thirdly God the Father spoke words of love and affirmation over Jesus. This is amazing in itself, but it was right at the start of Jesus’ public ministry. Jesus was obedient. Jesus was anointed. Jesus was affirmed. As Christians let us be obedient to, anointed and affirmed by our great God!
