Phase 3 Opportunities

All the ‘opportunities’ posted here have been sorted, as far as possible, into some general categories which are:

  • Local Community
  • Local Church
  • Wider Church
  • Overseas

They all carry links for your own further investigation and a local contact point who is happy to be approached for an informal chat. We hope that these ideas may be a vehicle to assist in your seeking of God’s purposes. Should you know of an opportunity that fits in with the Phase 3 vision, then please contact Paul & Sue Wernham. Local Community

posted by Paul Wernham (South Basingstoke Community Church) was launched in 2001 with the first, and still the only, national database of volunteering opportunities in the UK. Volunteering is simple. It's about giving your time to do something useful, without getting paid (apart from expenses). In return you get the satisfaction of time and effort well spent. In addition, volunteering can be a great way to: meet new people learn new skills gain useful experience. It should also be fun!

The range of opportunities is huge. Whatever skills and experience you have, there is something that you can do. The best way to see what is available is to browse on the do-it database.

There are no age-limits on volunteering, but there can sometimes be difficulties for people under-16 or over-65, mostly for insurance reasons. If you have any concerns, ask the organisation that you are appying to. Once you start volunteering you should usually expect: payment of out-of pocket expenses (eg travel) a clear idea of what your role will be appropriate training and support If you aren't clear about anything, don't be afraid to ask someone.

ONE-OFF CLEANING: For people who for various reasons (Health problems etc) cannot keep on top of their cleaning. The occasional "Blitz" is needed. Henry & AnneMarie Ford, formally of South Church, now pastor the community church in Hexham, Northumberland. They will always welcome supportive visits from mature Christians, so why not have a week-end away or take a holiday in the beautiful countryside of Northumbria (eg Hadrian’s Wall nearby), blessing & encouraging the saints at the same time.

Contact Henry & AnneMarie directly 01434 606451 or have an informal chat to Stephen & Sylvia Poulton 422671 or Eric & Ann Sidnell 328679

MOTHERS AND FATHERS NEEDED: Wherever we go both home and abroad there is a desperate need for mothers and fathers; people who can bring stability and peace just by being there! Leaders long for the support of mature steady men and women who have a loving welcoming approach, who are willing to support and pray. This is not rocket science! It's about encouragement and support. Exmouth is one such place...think sun, sea and a church that needs you!

Transformation Business Network (TBN) is a group of Christian business people whose aim is to use sustainable business to bring physical and spiritual transformation to the poor. Members have helped with projects ranging from bee keeping in Kenya, business training in Kosovo to a larger charity working in Cambodia. They regularly run exposure trips where a group goes to look at what is happening in different countries and look for ways to get involved. It is through one of these trips that Honora and I went to see some Christian hospitals in India and we are going back for our third visit in March this year.

I have been project managing the creation of a web portal where TBN members can post up details of the projects they are working on. There are over 35 projects on the site at the moment, many of which were set up by groups of normal people like you and me who found something they could get involved with. Please have a look at or at the charity's main web site at, or email me to chat some more.

Mozambique - Elias and Debbie Santos and their three children work with Youth With A Mission in Marromeu, Mozambique. They welcome anybody who would like to stay with them for a short or long period of time. There are opportunities for a wide range of practical work, ranging from DIY to gardening and car mechanics. Debbie has a small son who needs looking after while she attends to the schooling of her older children. She works with them on a Accdelerated Christian Education (paces) basis. I am sure she would be glad of help with the education of the older two children. Elias visits many churches in the area and also helps run a YWAM training programme for Church Pastors. The ability to speak Portuguese would be a help but is not essential. In the first instance contact Roger for an informal chat on (01256) 329857 or email or direct contact with Elias & Debbie via email
