For many years she helped with the disabled children in Kampala with a) a disability clinic, b) a day school teaching practical skills and c) a day boarding school teaching practical skills 20 mls outside Kampala.

Recently, she has also been involved in the initial stages of a healing/counselling & vocational centre just outside Kampala.

Kate Tolhurst

Kate Tolhurst left the UK in 2008 to live and work in Uganda at Kasana Children’s Centre, a home devoted to the care of orphaned children. The home is part of New Hope, Uganda, an organisation originally set up by an American couple, Jay and Vicki Dangers, to care for orphans of the civil war.

Kate went out initially to care for a severely disabled boy called Hassan but has since trained up others to do this and is now responsible for the running of the New Hope Special Needs Programme. This includes teaching a class of 8 children with disabilities in the primary school, overseeing the running of ‘Hassan`s House’ where Hassan and 4 other individuals with disabilities live, and the ever-growing work in the local community.
