Street Pastors

Street PastorsThe teams go out armed with bags full of lollipops, flip-flops & bottled water. It is always surprising how offering lollipops to a person can calm a heated situation. Girls who have consumed too much drink and are unable to balance on their high heeled shoes, appreciate the offer of a free pair of flip-flops to make their journey home much more comfortable.

Friday 11th July 2008 saw the launch of Street Pastors in Basingstoke. Volunteers from churches across the town, having completed a short mandatory training programme, walked into the night life of Basingstoke to bring God’s love to the revellers who are out in and around the bars and night clubs in the town. Now, each Friday night, from about 10.30pm, the Street Pastors move out in teams from their base in the URC church in London Street. Wearing distinctive uniforms, they move around the bars and night clubs until closing time around 3am each Saturday morning.

The response that we have received from the regulars in the bars, clubs, passers by, door staff and the police has been very positive and we have been made very welcome within the town’s night-time economy. We make it clear to people that we are not about preaching, but offering practical help and support. However, people willingly come up to us and ask all sorts of questions. They regard us as their friends. It is amazing what some people want to talk about at 1.30am in the morning! Many of us can tell of the exciting encounters we have had, giving us the opportunity to share testimony of our personal relationship with Jesus.

We consider prayer cover for the pastors is very important when we are out. We are very thankful to our team of Prayer Pastors who meet in the URC whilst we walk the streets, and also for those at home who also faithfully pray for us.

We would love to have more teams, and to be able to go out on Saturday nights.

To do this, more volunteers are required. If you feel God’s calling to join the Street Pastors or you would like to join the prayer team, please contact us.
