True Giving

28th February 2018

This week I have been reading Mark’s Gospel. This was probably the first eye witness account of what Jesus did written around 55AD. A major theme is ‘action’. When reading it you hardly have time to catch your breath as Jesus moves swiftly from one incredible act to the next! In chapter 12 Jesus was in the Temple in Jerusalem observing...

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few pence. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything - all she had to live on.’
Mark 12:41-44 The NIV Bible

The temple was full of hypocrisy. There were people wanting to appear righteous, holy and good in the eyes of others. But Jesus saw something going at the offering box! The issue was not how much money was being given, but the reason behind the giving. Those who had wealth were able to give a lot, and still maintain a comfortable life. Not so the widow! Jesus said she gave everything out of her poverty. The Bile does not say any more about that widow, so we don’t know why she gave as she did. Jesus highlighted that it’s not how much is given but what is the heart motivation behind it.
