Turn your back?

6th September 2017

This week I have been reading Isaiah. He is known as one of the ‘major’ prophets in the Old Testament. That’s because his ‘book’ is a whopping 66 chapters! Many scholars believe that Isaiah prophesied for around 60 years between
740BC - 680BC. This is a big chunk of ancient history and stormy period in Israel’s life! Chapter 30 comes as part of a section where Isaiah is pronouncing ‘woes’ over Israel. That’s because the nation was rejecting God and not following His ways. However, in the midst of the ‘woes’ hope and grace was there...

This is what the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, says: “If you come back to me and trust me, you will be saved. If you will be calm and trust me, you will be strong.” But you don’t want to do that. The Lord wants to show his mercy to you. He wants to rise and comfort you. The Lord is a fair God, and everyone who waits for his help will be happy.
Isaiah 30:15&18 The NCV Bible

Here we read of truth and grace in action. God could see that Israel was rejecting Him. They were behaving like the other countries around them. Yet in His heart, He longed to show mercy, comfort and help. That was freely available if they stopped and turned to Him! It seems to me that this is just as true today as it was then in ancient Israel - God has not changed! He sees how people turn away from Him and try to manage and fix things without Him. However, God is there, longing to show His mercy, comfort and help. Today don’t turn your back on God, but turn towards God, He is waiting!
